A week ago last Wednesday (that’s August 21 for those of you keeping score at home), I fell and twisted my ankle badly at fencing practice. The bruise is finally gone, but there’s still quite a bit of swelling.  It’s not the first occasion on which I have hurt this ankle, nor the worst.  I iced it, wrapped it up, and took a few days just to work out before returning to fencing.

Often I find that I fence unusually well when I’m recovering from an injury.  I move more deliberately to avoid re-injuring myself, and I avoid ugly exchanges where I might lose my balance.  I’ll be watching myself and trying to incorporate that caution and thoughtfulness as my ankle heals.

I may not be able to wear cute shoes for a few more weeks, but if I’m fencing well maybe it’s not so bad.
